Become a Driving Instructor

You need no formal qualifications to train to become a driving instructor, however you must meet some basic criteria:-

You must have held your full UK (or European) driving licence for at least 3.5 years.
You should have less than six points on your driving licence (this rule is not set in stone and each case is looked at on an individual basis).
You must be a “fit and proper” person. You will be subject to a criminal records check although some minor offences may not cause any problems. Your eyesight must be ok – you should be able to read a number plate from a set distance (and you may wear glasses or contact lenses if necessary).
No two people are the same and every individual circumstance is taken into account by the DVSA. For more information or to find out if you are likely to be accepted to train to become a driving instructor please call us on 0800 987 5423 for a no obligation chat.

To become a driving instructor you need to take three examinations. With good quality comprehensive training they are all relatively straightforward.

Part 1 – The Theory & Hazard Perception Test. You will be asked 100 multiple choice questions followed by a computer simulation whereby you simply click the mouse when you see a hazard developing ahead. We provide a great study pack for this exam (including all the questions and answers), so providing you study this element should be a doodle!

Part 2 – The Advanced Driving Test. Simply drive for about an hour to a high standard, You can already drive, so for this element we concentrate on bringing your skills up to date and getting rid of those “bad habits”. The examiner will also ask you to carry out a number of reversing exercises and a controlled (emergency) stop. With the right training and plenty of practice you should confidently pass this element.

Part 3 – The test of your instructional ability. During this part the examiner will portray the role of two pupils, one beginner and one with more experience. You will be given a set subject, simply guide the pupil to success by spotting their faults, dealing with them and ensuring you pass on the skills and understanding to prevent the faults from recurring.

*The Part 3 test is changing to be brought in line with the standards check. this means some changes to how the test is conducted, replacing the role play of a pupil by the examiner with a real student needing instruction. These changes will be covered during your training to ensure you are prepared fully. This change only applies to those sitting their part 3 after the 2nd October 2017.
